Embarcadero Webinar: How Meaningful Use Impacts Healthcare Data Management Professionals

Embarcadero Technologies and healthcare IT expert Shahid Shah on Wednesday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. EDT for an insightful one-hour webinar that explores the impact of Meaningful Use (MU) and the certification of electronic health record (EHR) systems on data management professionals.

To register for this free webinar, visit the registration site.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, created an opportunity to improve the performance of the nation’s health system through an unprecedented investment in health information technology. However, healthcare entities must implement 25 major MU requirements into their EHR systems to qualify for a piece of the billions of dollars in government incentive funds.

Healthcare architects, developers and DBAs developing information systems must be thoroughly familiar with MU to understand how the requirements will change their existing and future implementations. A recent survey of healthcare IT professionals conducted by Embarcadero shows that close to 60% are in the process of implementing an EHR system.

Webinar attendees will learn:
• An explanation of ARRA, HITECH, MU, and certification
• How technical personnel such as data architects, DBAs and developers will be affected by MU
• The best ways to determine the MU gaps that might be found in existing systems
• The types of additional expertise technical personnel may need to meet MU
• How quickly systems will need to be modified and deployed to adhere to MU rules

Registered webinar attendees will also receive a complimentary copy of Shahid Shah’s white paper, “How Meaningful Use Impacts Healthcare Data Management Professionals.”

Embarcadero Ups Ante in Database Tools Market with Multi-Platform, On-Demand XE Products

logo_prod_red_black_400

Embarcadero Technologies, long known for providing premium database design, development and management tools for all major database platforms, is unveiling a new line of database products that carry an XE brand. Embarcadero XE products incorporate three distinguishing features – deep, native support across all major databases with a consistent user interface, centralized license management and on-demand tool access via Embarcadero® ToolCloud™, and an easy upgrade path to Embarcadero® All-Access™ XE.

“So now, we are not only changing how premium database tools are sold, we are transforming how IT organizations can manage, provision and access those tools so they can optimize their technology spend and improve efficiency.”

XE products represent a fundamental shift in the database tools market. Leading vendors, including Embarcadero, have historically offered tools with feature support for multiple databases, but support for each database was sold separately. With Embarcadero’s XE line, support for all database types is included with each product. Embarcadero is also the only vendor providing ToolCloud technology with its products.

“With today’s increasingly complex, heterogeneous database environments, organizations need to maximize the capabilities of IT staff and leverage opportunities for greater automation, efficiency and scale,” said Will Cappelli, research vice president, Gartner. “While domain-specific database tools help meet some of these challenges, companies need to consider how easily these tools can be accessed and managed or their sought-after operational benefits may be limited.”

“We are meeting the challenges of complex IT environments by making it more cost-effective to equip IT staff with the tools they need, while simultaneously making those tools easier to manage,” said Michael Swindell, senior vice president of marketing and products for Embarcadero. “So now, we are not only changing how premium database tools are sold, we are transforming how IT organizations can manage, provision and access those tools so they can optimize their technology spend and improve efficiency.”

Embarcadero XE products are distinguished by the following capabilities:

  • Heterogeneous database support: Each XE product includes deep, native database platform and version support for all major databases, including Oracle®, Microsoft SQL Server®, DB2®, Sybase®, MySQL® and more with each product providing a consistent user interface across database platforms.
  • Embarcadero ToolCloud-enabled: XE products provide users with on-demand, “zero-install” access to tools, along with centralized license management, which streamline the access, administration and provisioning of tool licenses for organizations with multiple users.
  • All-Access upgradeable: Embarcadero products can be upgraded to All-Access XE, a complete, on-demand tool chest for architects, DBAs and developers working in heterogeneous database environments.

Prior to Embarcadero’s new XE product line, data management professionals had two unfavorable options – using rudimentary ODBC/JDBC-based database tools that only provided generic feature support, or using platform-specific tools from database vendors or third-party tool vendors for native feature support and control. Embarcadero’s new XE tools overcome the shortcomings of these options by incorporating deep, native support for all major databases within a single tool, enabling users to extend their skills across both single platform and heterogeneous environments. Inclusion of support for all databases reduces licensing, training and operational costs.

“In the past, a customer would be identified as an Oracle shop or a SQL Server shop, but today’s IT organizations need to manage various types of databases,” added Swindell. “Our new XE products ensure they’re prepared for whatever database comes in front of them.”

XE products also incorporate Embarcadero’s ToolCloud technology. ToolCloud centralizes and simplifies tool licensing and provisioning and gives users click-and-run access to tools via Embarcadero™ InstantOn™ capabilities. This enables users to access the tools they need on-demand with full fidelity and performance and without complex installations.

Embarcadero’s initial introduction of XE products is part of a larger companywide initiative that involves extending the XE brand and capabilities across its data modeling and application development tools later this year. Meanwhile, Embarcadero’s initial line of XE tools include:

  • All-Access XE – The industry’s only on-demand heterogeneous tool chest
  • DB Change Manager XE – A tool for simplifying, automating and reporting on database changes
  • DB Optimizer XE – A tool for heterogeneous database SQL profiling, tuning and monitoring
  • DBArtisan® XE – A tool for heterogeneous database administration
  • Rapid SQL® XE – A heterogeneous SQL integrated development environment (IDE)

Pricing and Availability

Five Embarcadero XE tools are now available at varying starting prices. Pricing for All-Access XE begins at $2,995, pricing for DB Change Manager XE begins at $795, pricing for DB Optimizer XE begins at $795, pricing for DBArtisan XE begins at $4,995 and pricing for Rapid SQL XE begins at $1,495. All pricing is in U.S. dollars.

Embarcadero Expands Flexibility for Data Modelers with ER/Studio Enterprise 8.5

Embarcadero Technologies, a provider of multi-platform database tools and developer software, has announced the general availability of Embarcadero's flagship data modeling suite, ER/Studio Enterprise 8.5. This newest version of Embarcadero's data modeling tool combines process modeling, data modeling, application modeling and reporting into a comprehensive design and modeling solution.

Key themes of the new release are tighter integration of components within the suite, support for better collaboration and communication between modelers as well as non-modelers, and overall enhanced productivity.

A big part of enhancements within the new release are to enable data architects to better communicate with their communities and their organizations, Jason Tiret, director of product management for modeling and design solutions, Embarcadero, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Supporting this effort, Tiret notes, are new UML modeling features for business and software modeling, as well as integration of ER/Studio Business Architect with the ER/Studio Repository and ER/Studio Portal to allow data modelers to better communicate with the business.

The new release includes new workflow communication facilities with Web 2.0 technologies like bi-directional commenting between ER/Studio Data Architect and ER/Studio Portal to assist and streamline communication and model review with non-modelers. As a result, there is now the ability to comment on objects in the model with workflow-status kinds of comments to help modelers better collaborate better together and so they don't have to clutter up the metadata in the models, explains Tiret. "They can now have a specific place that they can put comments that are geared toward workflow and review in the product and that will actually feed out to the ER/Studio Portal and allow non-modelers to view those comments and to add comments. It is not only to streamlining communication, and the workflow and peer review process among modelers but it also going to help those modelers communicate with non-modelers like DBAs, developers, business analysts and business users that need access to the metadata and want to actively help with the modeling process."

ER/Studio Enterprise 8.5 also includes updated DBMS features for the latest editions of Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 LUW, InterBase and Teradata

Top Five Reasons to Switch from ERwin Data Modeler to Embarcadero ER/Studio

With full availability of ER/Studio® 8.5 only a few weeks away, Embarcadero Technologies is focused on educating data modelers about the benefits of ER/Studio versus ERwin® Data Modeler. Today, Embarcadero issued the top five reasons to make the switch.

  • Superior Productivity Using a Model File System - ER/Studio allows users to create multiple, mutually independent physical models from one common logical model within the same .dm1 file; ERwin requires multiple files to achieve the same effect thus losing the traceability between the logical and physical artifacts. ER/Studio’s separate but integrated approach offers the user a complete, easy to understand solution for synchronizing and updating logical models, physical models and live databases without having to manage and synchronize many loose files.
  • Superior Traceability With Lineage and Metadata Impact Analysis - ER/Studio provides features for maintaining the traceability between the original logical model and multiple physical models.  Coupled with ER/Studio’s ability to maintain multiple models within the same file, impact analysis is far easier and more reliable than with ERwin.  In addition to reports, ER/Studio also provides a “Where Used” feature which includes even more capabilities.
  • Superior Productivity Through Diagram Layout & Navigation Features – ER/Studio is designed to dramatically increase user productivity through superior navigation of large, complex data models. This saves time when searching for deeply buried elements in a model.  ER/Studio provides a number of features to assist with the management of large models.
  • Superior Documentation and Communication – ER/Studio Enterprise includes a web portal that allows for near real-time publication of the information contained in the ER/Studio repository.  The portal allows developers, DBAs and business analysts to browse, search and report on the model metadata via a web browser.  It drastically streamlines the process of communicating the models by offering a “self-service” method for publishing the information.  Data architects no longer need to refresh reports any time a model changes.  The portal has a separate reporting repository that is optimized for searching and reporting that is kept in sync with the ER/Studio repository.
  • Superior Reliability & Advancement – Embarcadero’s focus has always been centered on helping companies design, build, optimize and run their critical software applications and databases. Unlike CA, Embarcadero doesn’t have the vast array of over 1,300 products to support and maintain. We have a clear competitive advantage on deciding which products to support and build out.  With a dedicated support center and committed staff to help, we are able to resolve  issues quickly and efficiently without the hassle of dealing with an outsourced  support solution like ERwin that often can be long and drawn out.

ER/Studio continues to be the fastest growing database design and modeling tool on the market, not only for Embarcadero’s reliable support staff, but also for the reliability of the product performance and frequency of enhancements. Embarcadero has a strong investment in research and development behind ER/Studio, releasing multiple product enhancements each year to meet the demanding modeling requirements and reliability standards of large enterprises now and in the future. Our customers frequently tell us valuable time and resources are lost to basic functionality and bugs found in ERwin. Reliability and advancement are no longer optional in organizations that depend on database design and modeling for speed, competitiveness and uptime.

Profile Tune and Stress Test Your SQL

We took a step back after a recent demo of DB Optimizer, a SQL profiling and tuning IDE, to soak in what amazing work the development team has done building a powerful and easy to use SQL optimization tool over the course of the last ~2 years.

The fact that you can profile and tune SQL across the Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, and Sybase platforms all through a single user interface is quite compelling - and now with the latest version you can stress test your SQL code through the load editor feature. I've put together a 2 minute video that quickly moves through each of the major features:

Embarcadero DB Optimizer maximizes database and application performance by enabling DBAs and developers to quickly discover, diagnose, and optimize poor-performing SQL.

Embarcadero adds Windows 7 multi-touch to RAD tools

Great article from SD Times, by David Worthington

Database and software development tool maker Embarcadero will fully support the Windows 7 API and multi-touch technology in upcoming versions of its rapid application development (RAD) products.

Embarcadero's C++Builder, a RAD C++ development environment for Windows, along with the Delphi RAD Visual development environment for Windows software and database applications, will have interfaces to work with the APIs, said David Intersimone, the company's vice president of developer relations and chief evangelist.

Both products will have a gesture management component for Windows 7 that will abstract out its multi-touch capabilities from the Windows API to make it easier for developers to use those features in their applications, he said.

"Developers drop it down on any form in an application, and it becomes gesture-enabled. They just set properties and hook on the gesture event that takes place," Intersimone said. Developers can also create custom gestures to override predefined ones, he added.

The gesture manager also supports single touch for older touch-based systems, such as kiosk screens, and can use a standard mouse in replace of a finger. Older touch-based systems lack Windows 7's touch-screen technology and treat gestures as mouse input, he explained.

Microsoft released Windows 7 to manufacturing on July 22. Embarcadero must wait until Microsoft finalizes the Windows 7 software development kit before it can finalize its products, Intersimone said. The SDK usually ships a few weeks after Windows goes RTM, he added. He would not provide a timeframe for the products' availability.

ARTS Leverages Embarcadero’s ER/Studio to Build Industry-Standard Data Models and XML Schemas

Washington, July 27, 2009–The Association for Retail Technology Standards, the standards division of the National Retail Federation, announced today that it is adopting Embarcadero Technologies’ award-winning suite of database software tools, including its ER/Studio Enterprise data modeling tool, DBArtisan database administration tool, and Change Manager database change management tool. ARTS will use the tools to build industry-standard data models and XML schemas for the retail industry and to maintain its existing library of 17 schemas associated with its operational and warehouse models.

“Through our agreement with Embarcadero, we will now have the optimum tools to develop new data models and XML standards as well as enhance what we already have in place,” said Richard Mader, executive director of ARTS. “We’ve heard loud and clear from our volunteer committee that they could benefit from tools that allow for multiple concurrent users and that generate formats which are compatible with other modeling tools. Now we’re able to answer that call.”

“We’ve invested significant time and effort into building a rich collaborative environment to support the worldwide base of ARTS members who contribute to the development of retail technology standards,” said Kirstin H. Wright, Chief Visionary Officer for Retail Anywhere and chair of the ARTS Data Model Committee. “The Embarcadero toolset will support this effort by enabling us to effectively harness our richest resource, our members, and make efficient use of their valuable time to build ARTS standards bigger, better and faster.”

“ARTS delivers a great service to its members by offering them valuable data model templates and XML structures that give them a head-start on their retail systems projects,” said Jason Tiret, director of modeling and design solutions, Embarcadero Technologies. “Our tools will help ARTS continue to advance their standards efforts and, with features like the Repository included with ER/Studio, its global committee members can better collaborate on the ARTS Retail Data Model.”

The ARTS Retail Data Model, currently in version 6.0, is in use around the world, supporting a full range of computer applications to operate retail businesses across multiple segments such as Shell International Petroleum Company, McDonalds, Nike and many others.

ARTS expects to fully convert its data models to ER/Studio by the end of July. All future versions of the Data Model beyond 6.0 will be developed in ER/Studio, but will also be available to members using other tools.

IT's Challenge: Systemwide Optimization or Bust

Empowered with the right tools, IT can optimize application and database performance.

by Greg Nerpouni

The development of database-backed applications continues to accelerate despite shrinking IT budgets, and the distinct separation of duties between database professionals and application developers continues to blur. With DBAs becoming more focused on meeting production service level agreements (SLAs), application developers -- who are fluent in languages such as Java and C++, but admittedly not in SQL -- are being forced to pick up the slack and write their own SQL.
